Malkajgiri lends its name to one of India’s largest parliamentary constituencies by number of voters, which tells you most of what you need to know about the area: it is enormous, and it filled in fast. The belt runs from Malkajgiri itself out through Neredmet, Sainikpuri, Lothkunta and Dammaiguda, with Tarnaka and the Osmania side to the south-west.
The second half of the story is ECIL. Electronics Corporation of India Limited set up here, and the industrial and electronics units that grew around it are still working. That gives this belt a scrap mix you do not find in the purely residential parts of the city: electronics and component scrap, panel and cable scrap, and the heavier metal that comes with any manufacturing floor.
Sainikpuri is worth mentioning on its own. It is a large ex-servicemen colony, and the name says as much. The housing there is mostly independent houses and low-rise blocks on generous plots, which means household loads that are bigger than a flat clear-out but nothing like the bungalow compounds on the other side of the city.
How we reach Malkajgiri.
Malkajgiri is about six kilometres from the Kavadiguda yard, north-east. We come up through Musheerabad and Neredmet, or across from Secunderabad and up ECIL Cross Road, depending on which end of the belt you are on. Twenty to thirty minutes outside peak, and usually combined with ECIL and Secunderabad pickups on the same trip.
