ECIL is named after the plant. Electronics Corporation of India Limited was set up here in the 1960s as a government electronics enterprise, and the area grew around it: the factory, the units that supply and support it, and the colonies built for the people who work in them. The junction at ECIL Cross Roads is the centre of the whole thing.
That gives this area a scrap mix you do not find in a purely residential locality. Electronics and component scrap, panel and cable, instrument housings, sheet and the heavier metal a manufacturing floor produces, all of it turning up alongside the ordinary household loads from the colonies. It is a working industrial belt rather than a suburb with some workshops in it.
The residential side is the employee colonies, and they behave differently from newer housing. They were built together, to a common design, and they have aged together, which means appliance replacement happens in clusters rather than one house at a time. When a block of quarters turns over, several households are clearing out at once.
How we reach ECIL.
ECIL is about ten kilometres north-east of the yard. We come up through Musheerabad and Neredmet, or across from Secunderabad and up ECIL Cross Roads, depending on which end you are on. Thirty to forty minutes outside peak, and usually batched with Malkajgiri and Alwal pickups.
