Kukatpally is what happens when a housing board builds for a hundred thousand people at once. The KPHB colony went up in phases from the late 1970s through the 1980s and is still the largest planned housing colony in Hyderabad. Most of those blocks are three to five storeys of modest flats that have since passed through two or three owners.
That history is visible in what we collect here. A flat of that age is on its second or third air conditioner, its second refrigerator, and very often a first-generation inverter that has finally given up. Add the window grills, steel almirahs, cots and water pumps from the same era, and Kukatpally throws off more household appliance and metal scrap per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in the city.
The other half of Kukatpally is new. Redevelopment keeps replacing the older Housing Board blocks with taller towers, and every demolition and refit produces structural steel, old plumbing, cable and fittings. Along the main road, shops, coaching centres and small offices turn over computers, printers, UPS units and shop fittings on a rolling basis. We take all of it, from a single dead fridge to a full refit.
How we reach Kukatpally.
From our yard in Kavadiguda we head north-west up Sardar Patel Road and onto the Old Mumbai Highway, then in through KPHB.
