Banjara Hills takes its name from the Banjara traders who moved through on the old trade routes, long before it became Hyderabad’s best-known address in the 1970s. It is still built at a different scale from the rest of the city: plot sizes are generous, many properties are whole compounds with a main house, staff quarters and an outhouse, and the roads are numbered rather than named: Road No. 1 through Road No. 14, with Film Nagar and the Peddamma Temple area at the southern edge.

A Banjara Hills job is almost never a single appliance. It is a compound being cleared, a house changing hands, or a bungalow coming down for a new building. That means gates, grills, railings and structural steel by the tonne; split air conditioning spread across a dozen rooms; diesel generator sets; pool and landscape equipment; and the office and household e-waste that goes with a property of that size.

Older bungalows on these roads are steadily coming down for new towers, and that produces the heaviest scrap we handle in the city: rebar, structural steel, old pipework, cable and fittings, in quantities that need a vehicle and a crew rather than a pickup.
