KPHB is the colony itself, and it is the largest planned housing colony in Hyderabad. The Housing Board built it in phases from the late 1970s through the 1980s, and the phases still organise the place: phase 1 through phase 9, each with its own internal roads and its own small market, with the Metro station and the main road cutting through the middle.
What that produces is a self-contained kind of scrap. A colony this size has its own commercial centres inside it, so a lot of the turnover happens within walking distance of the flats rather than on a high street somewhere else. Shops, clinics, tuition centres and small offices inside the colony refit and change hands, and the flats above and behind them are on their second or third round of appliances.
Because the phases went up over a decade and have aged at different rates, the condition of the stock varies more here than in a single-build tower. Some blocks have been refurbished and some have not, and the older phases throw off more of the original fittings: window grills, steel almirahs, cots, water tanks and pipe from the same generation as the buildings.
How we reach KPHB Colony.
KPHB is about thirteen kilometres from the yard. We head north-west up Sardar Patel Road and onto the Old Mumbai Highway, then in through the colony. Thirty-five to forty-five minutes outside peak, more when the KPHB and Kukatpally junctions are backed up, so we schedule this area for the morning and late-afternoon windows.
